| Hebrews 13:8Jesus ChristEver the Same Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Preachers in New Testament times exhorted believers to have but one goal in life: the Lord Jesus Christ. The Saviour was to be the object of their faith and the pattern for their conduct. Everything they said and did should tend to this great end the glory of Christ. The Saviour was to be the sum and substance of their lives. This was true in a measure even of those who lived before Christ came. They were looking ahead to the appearing of the Messiah. Already He was the hope of the believers heart. Jesus said, Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad (John 8:56). Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt (Heb.11:26). Job knew that his redeemer would stand at the latter day upon the earth (Job 19:25). Is this true of ourselves also? We need to be Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2). And this will surely be true for every saved sinner until the close of time. It all shows us that there has only ever been but one plan of salvation, the covenant of grace; one Saviour, Jesus Christ, the Mediator of that covenant; and one way to be saved, through repentance and faith in Him. To save His people the Son of God took our nature but He remained the same divine Person. He suffered and bled and died for sins once at Calvary but the merit and benefits of His atonement have been applied by the Holy Spirit to elect and believing sinners ever since Adam fell. It shall continue to be so until the whole church is gathered by the gospel and is complete in Christ.
